Hannah – A Prayer of Desperation: 1 Samuel 1-2

Hannah’s Pain

Have you ever prayed out of pain and desperation? Have you ever bargained with God and promised to do something for Him if He would do something for you? Hannah’s prayer in 1 Samuel 1-2 feels like this kind of prayer. But it is more than a negotiation, and it offers several lessons to guide our prayer life and deepen our relationship with God.

Hannah lived at a time of religious and civil upheaval in ancient Israel. She was married to Elkanah, who loved her deeply. However, Hannah was unable to have children. To make matters worse, Elkanah’s other wife (always a bad idea) had several children and constantly belittled Hannah, making her feel unworthy because of her barrenness.

Hannah’s Prayer

Every year, the family traveled to the tabernacle of the Lord in Shiloh to worship and offer sacrifices. During this time, Hannah’s pain over her bareness was especially raw. But she did not let it consume her. Instead, she took her anguish to the Lord in prayer, knowing He was the only One who could help her.

In her distress, Hannah prayed and made a vow to the Lord as recorded in 1 Samuel 1:11, “Lord Almighty, if you look upon your servant’s misery and remember me… and give me a son, then I will give him to you for all the days of his life…” Hannah was not selfishly bargaining with God; she was offering what she wanted most back to God.

Her silent prayer was so passionate that the priest, Eli, thought she was drunk. But Hannah explained that she was “pouring her heart out to the Lord.” This idea of pouring our hearts out to God captures the intensity of authentic prayer. This kind of prayer was raw, unfiltered, and deeply personal.

Hannah’s Faith

After she prayed, something remarkable happened. I Samuel 1:15 tells us, “Then she went on her way…and her face was no longer downcast.” Hannah left her burden with God and did not return to pick it back up again. She did not yet have God’s answer, but she had God’s peace. She was now completely trusting God’s timing and provision.

In time, Hannah gave birth to a boy named Samuel. After Samuel was weaned, she returned to Shiloh, presented her son to Eli the priest, and asked him to raise and train the boy in the ways of the Lord. In doing so, she showed her obedience by releasing back to God the very child she had prayed so hard for. What God had given her, she gave back to the Lord.

As a young man, God called Samuel to become one of Israel’s greatest leaders. He led Israel out of the dark period of the Judges and into a new monarchy under King Saul and King David. For her part, Hannah’s response to God’s faithfulness was continued worship. 1 Samuel 2 records her beautiful song praising God for His faithfulness, justice, and mercy.

Hannah’s Lessons

Hannah’s story does far more than describe a personal miracle or an answered prayer. It depicts how one woman’s faith changed the course of a nation's history. While we may not be in a position to change the world, we are called to change lives, including our own, by following these lessons on prayer that Hannah teaches us.

Bring Your Pain to God – Hannah didn’t hide her pain and pretend everything was okay. She brought raw emotions to God, trusting Him to handle them on His terms, not hers. Are you willing to let God see you for who you really are: someone who is in need and incapable of solving your own problems?

Total Surrender – Hannah’s prayer was born out of pain, leading her to surrender to God and His ways totally. She had no safety net or fallback plan. She was willing to trust God with the most important thing in her life. Is there something in your life that you need to lay before God and trust Him with today?

Trust and Obey – Hannah made her vow before there was any evidence of an answer. When God answered, she did not hesitate to fulfill her promise and release her most precious treasure back to God. Are you willing not only to give things to God, but also to leave them on His altar and not return to pick them back up?
